Ryan grew up in southern California where he played volleyball in high school. His first year he was fortunate enough to play for Jeff Campbell, now the head coach of the Cal State Northridge men's program. During high school he also played club volleyball for Marvin Hall, AVP and NCAA referee. His club experience not only gave him 4th place at Nationals in 1990 but allowed him to play against some of the best players in the nation; some of whom went on to play not just on the AVP tour but also on the US National Team. During these years, these experienced coaches helped him amass a few accolades, among them Most Valuable Player, All State, All County All-Star Team, lead the league in kills per game, hitting percentage, blocks per game and serving percentage. He was also an All-Star football player, basketball starter and track star. He has coached basketball, football and boys and girls volleyball on and off for the past eleven years.
Although Ryan loved volleyball, his passion for football took him to Abilene Christian University, where he played football and ran track.
Along with 900 Volleyball, Ryan also runs his own IT consulting firm doing work for Fortune 500 companies throughout the nation. In his spare time, Ryan enjoys scuba diving and running triathlons and duathlons. In 2005 Ryan was ranked 83rd in the nation for duathlons. Ryan also played on the 900 Coed team that placed 3rd at Adult Nationals in 2009 and 4th at Adult Nationals in 2008.
